SaaS Business Intelligence Gets a Boost

Today a small business can get good quality email (Gmail), telephony (Skype), hosting and accounting software (free on Office Live), and more. But it can’t get affordable price analytics software or some business intelligence software. The reason has been to do with the traditional license model “load, update, and upgrade”. Luckily this is changing. One data point is Business Object’s acquisition of Nsite.

Business Object’s press release makes interesting reading. It says that “SaaS is changing the software market”. Of course! Then they say that the SaaS approach is an “important new market to business intelligence”. Now they are talking! They also say that SaaS will help “make business intelligence more accessible and more affordable to all companies”. How true!

SaaS model will become more pervasive in a host of new categories. But why would a big company like Business Objects need to buy a small player like NSite? Jeff Kaplan has a nice post here where he explains why some of the major ISV’s are gobbling up SaaS players.

Why this blog?

The software industry is going through a seismic shift. This change goes by many names: On-Demand, Web 2.0, SaaS, etc. But they all point to the same conclusion - the era of the traditional software “load, update, and upgrade” model is ending. And, at this stage of industry evolution, it’s not so much about seeing what’s next; it’s mostly about making it happen. It’s about confronting legacy business models and dealing with innovators’ dilemmas. It’s about transformation and implementing orbit change. This blog is a conversation about all these issues.
