Charmed by Vint Cerf

I had a delightful lunch with Dr. Vint Cerf today. We were a small group of 10-12 people and had a free-flowing conversation about a host of topics. This was my first meeting with him. I have enormous respect for Vint given his role in shaping the Internet. Apart from Dennis Ritchie, he is the only other Turing Award (the computer science field’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize) winner that I have met.

We started by talking about the key inflections in the Indian IT industry over the years. That led us to innovation ecosystems in India and how/why they are different from those in Silicon Valley. After that, we inevitably drifted into a discussion about domestic markets and product incubation in India. Not surprisingly that led us to online collaboration. We didn’t stay on that topic very long before ending up on an insightful discussion about micro-communities. We talked about their growth, worried about their social impact and even discussed the relative merits of various types of political systems. For me this is was the most interesting part of the conversation. Time just flew. Somehow we managed to also talk about net neutrality, IPv6 adoption, communal entertainment habits in India and its implications for IP TV. All this is fodder for future posts.

Vint was charming, modest and insightful. His visit is a PR success for Google. Here is some blog and press coverage.

Why this blog?

The software industry is going through a seismic shift. This change goes by many names: On-Demand, Web 2.0, SaaS, etc. But they all point to the same conclusion - the era of the traditional software “load, update, and upgrade” model is ending. And, at this stage of industry evolution, it’s not so much about seeing what’s next; it’s mostly about making it happen. It’s about confronting legacy business models and dealing with innovators’ dilemmas. It’s about transformation and implementing orbit change. This blog is a conversation about all these issues.
