I like Vinnie Mirchandani because he doesn’t beat around the bush. He responds to Paul Graham’s article “Microsoft is Dead” by simply stating that its not just Microsoft but also IBM, SAP and Oracle (see his post “MISO is dead”). In a way he is right. They are all part of the fading edge. What’s rising in place of MISO is YEGA. The yahoo, eBay, Google and Amazon are part of the leading edge. But if truth be told, my respect goes to GET-IN, a slight twist on letters that represents GE, TI and Nokia…

Published by April 6th, 2007 in adaptable infrastucture. 0 CommentsAny successful business has to “keep the trains running on time”. Ten years back, in our industry, the focus was on telephone service outages. Now the focus is on web site outages. Yahoo is the most reliable with zero downtime. Amazon has 21 mins of downtime which makes them 7th (among top 20) in terms of outage performance.

Published by January 25th, 2007 in offshoring, software industry, organizational design and adaptable infrastucture. 0 CommentsUtility infrastructure model is coming. There is no escaping this trend. Hot in Customers Eyes, Just Not in VC’s Eyes
Published by January 3rd, 2007 in investing, software industry and adaptable infrastucture. 1 CommentJoseph Landman has politely but firmly taken me to task for my earlier post, “The New Data Center Leading-Edge”. In spirit of friendly and constructive conversation, I’d like to post my reply… Having a growing market doesn’t make a segment “hot”. What would make HPC hot is if it was part of the current data center leading-edge. Alternatively, a “hot” startup can still happen if there is a disruptive game plan that the investors can put their arms around.

Now the focus is on tuning the infrastructure to get the best performance. Commodity building-locks and custom-software to tie it all together is the new norm in data center infrastructure… This rise of adaptable infrastructure is creating a new “lean” data center model… This current leading-edge in data centers will produce its own hot startups and segments…
Move Over Data Center
Published by November 23rd, 2006 in innovation, software industry and adaptable infrastucture. 1 CommentAbout a month back, Sun announced their Project Blackbox initiative. It’s a mobile data center product that’s essentially a shipping container full of water cooled low-power servers… But the real story is not about data center in a box, it’s about data center from a wall socket… Amazon’s S3 has created a huge marketplace for storage, backup tools, online backup vendors and other niche products. It’s quite likely that Amazon EC2 is going to do the same for the hosting market… New application categories will emerge and new markets will be created.
Nick Carr Labels it the Era of Frugal Computing
Published by November 10th, 2006 in software industry, adaptable infrastucture and SaaS. 0 CommentsNick Carr has a delightful commentary on … the shift that is talking place in the industry… and characterizes this as the “era of frugal computing”. While I think frugal computing is an evocative name… it doesn’t do justice to the industry transformation that is taking place…
